Let’s not forget Norton Commander, which is what started this software category. Norton Commander was a dual-pane, text-mode file manager for MS-DOS introduced by Peter Norton Computing in 1986. It let users copy, move, view, edit, and archive files quickly via function-key shortcuts. Its design became the template for later “orthodox” file managers such as Total Commander and Midnight Commander.
