In Gopher space, a gophermap is the file that defines the structure and content of a Gopher menu. Gopher is a protocol for distributing, searching, and retrieving documents over the Internet, preceding the World Wide Web.
A gophermap file lists the resources available in a Gopher directory and specifies how they should be presented to users. Each line in a gophermap represents an item in the Gopher menu and includes:
- Type: A character indicating the type of resource (e.g., 0 for text files, 1 for directories, h for HTML files).
- Display Text: The text that users see in the menu.
- Selector: The path or identifier for the resource.
- Host: The hostname of the server where the resource is located.
- Port: The port number on which the Gopher server is listening.
When a user accesses a Gopher directory, the gophermap file is parsed by the Gopher client to generate the menu interface.
